Insoluble Sulfur

Insoluble Sulfur Manufacturer & Supplier

Great Bridge Chemical supplies insoluble sulfur for tire manufacturing and industrial rubber compounding. Available grades include IS6005, IS6010, IS6033, IS7020, IS7520, IS8010, HS OT20, and HD OT20.
Insoluble sulfur is a polymeric form of sulfur used as a vulcanizing agent in rubber compounds. Compared with ordinary soluble sulfur, it has limited solubility in rubber before vulcanization and helps reduce sulfur migration and surface blooming during storage and processing.
This is particularly important in tire compounds and other rubber components where surface tack and adhesion between rubber layers or between rubber and reinforcing materials need to be maintained.

Applications

Radial Tire Manufacturing

Used in carcass, belt skim, and sidewall compounds to maintain interlayer tack and prevent premature sulfur migration prior to mold curing.

Steel Cord Conveyor Belts

Provides uniform cross-linking across thick rubber sections and rubber-to-cord interfaces without surface crystallization.

Automotive Hoses & Mechanical Goods

Prevents tack loss and surface defects in stacked, unvulcanized extruded profiles awaiting secondary assembly.

Performance & Quality

Reduced Sulfur Migration and Blooming
Insoluble sulfur has limited solubility in rubber compounds before vulcanization. This helps reduce sulfur migration to the compound surface and can support surface tack and adhesion between rubber layers during tire building and other processing operations.
The actual effect depends on the insoluble sulfur content, grade stability, dosage, compound composition, and storage conditions. Product selection should be based on the required compound performance rather than on the grade name alone.

Thermal Stability During Processing
Insoluble sulfur is a metastable polymeric form of sulfur. Under unsuitable temperature and storage conditions, it can revert toward soluble sulfur, affecting its processing behavior.
For compounds involving elevated mixing temperatures, buyers should review the grade's thermal stability data and evaluate the actual mixing cycle. HS OT20 and HD OT20 have published thermal stability values at 105°C for 15 minutes. HD OT20 also has a published value at 120°C for 15 minutes.

FAQ

Q: What is insoluble sulfur used for in rubber manufacturing?

A: Insoluble sulfur is a polymeric sulfur vulcanizing agent used in tire compounds and other sulfur-vulcanized rubber products. It helps reduce sulfur migration and surface blooming before vulcanization, which is important when maintaining tack and adhesion between rubber layers.

Q: What is the difference between insoluble sulfur and ordinary sulfur?

A: Insoluble sulfur is a polymeric form of sulfur with limited solubility in carbon disulfide under specified test conditions. In rubber compounds, it has lower migration before vulcanization than ordinary soluble sulfur. This makes it useful in applications where sulfur blooming and interlayer adhesion need to be controlled.

Q: What is the difference between IS7020 and IS7520?

A: Both grades have a stated total sulfur content of 79–81% and oil content of 19–21%. Their published insoluble sulfur contents differ: ≥90% for IS7020 and ≥94% for IS7520, expressed as a percentage of total sulfur. Buyers should compare the latest TDS and confirm the required specification before ordering.

Q: What is the difference between HS OT20 and HD OT20?

A: HS OT20 is identified as a high thermal stability grade, with a published thermal stability value of at least 75% at 105°C for 15 minutes. HD OT20 is identified as an oil-treated high-dispersion grade and has published thermal stability values of at least 75% at 105°C and 40% at 120°C, both for 15 minutes.
The choice depends on the compound's processing conditions and dispersion requirements.

Q: Can insoluble sulfur prevent sulfur blooming completely?

A: No grade should be considered a guarantee against blooming under all conditions. Insoluble sulfur can reduce sulfur migration, but the result depends on the grade, dosage, formulation, mixing conditions, storage temperature, and compatibility with other compounding ingredients.

Q: What technical documents can I request before placing an order?

A: Buyers can request the current Technical Data Sheet (TDS), Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and batch Certificate of Analysis (COA). For an accurate grade recommendation, provide the intended application, required sulfur content, oil content, processing conditions, and any specific quality limits.
