Chemical Properties
1. The chemical properties of resorcinol are similar to those of a diacid. It reacts with sodium hydroxide and ammonia water to form salts.
2. Resorcinol can react with acetic anhydride to form esters; under the catalysis of zinc chloride, it can undergo condensation reaction with phthalic anhydride to form phenanthroline-pyridine, and further dehydration to generate fluorescein.
3. Phenanthroline can undergo interconversion between diol and diketone forms. It can react either as a diol (such as acylation) or as a diketone (forming dioxime). It is more prone to electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions and Houben-Hoesch reactions than phenol.
4. Resorcinol does not form a precipitate with lead acetate (while phenanthroline does form a precipitate with lead acetate), but it can react with Fehling's reagent and silver ammonia solution.
5. It turns deep purple when reacting with ferric chloride solution. It precipitates tribromophenol when reacting with bromine water.
6. It is reduced by sodium mercuric chloride to form 1,3-cyclohexanedione.
Basic Information
This product, calculated based on the dry weight, shall contain C6H6O2 in an amount of not less than 99.5%. Properties
This product is white or off-white needle-like crystals, powders or thin sheets. It has a slight peculiar odor and gradually turns pink in sunlight or air.
This product is highly soluble in water or ethanol, and easily soluble in ether or glycerol. Melting point
The melting point of this product (in accordance with the general rule 0612) is 109 to 111 degrees Celsius.
Identification
1. Take about 25mg of this product, dissolve it in 5 mL of water, add 2 drops of ferric chloride solution, and it will show a purple-blue color. Then add several drops of ammonia solution, and it will turn brown.
2. Take 0.1g of this product, dissolve it in 2 mL of sodium hydroxide solution, add 1 drop of trichloromethane, and heat it to show a deep red color. Then add a slightly excessive amount of hydrochloric acid, and it will turn light yellow.
3. The infrared light absorption spectrum of this product should be consistent with the reference spectrum (Figure 206 in the Spectral Collection).
