Technical Parameters

product-418-418

Product Name: Zinc Stearate

Synonym: Zinc Octadecanoate

CAS No.: 557-05-1

Physicochemical Properties

  • Fine white powder.
  • Melting point: 120–125°C. Soluble in toluene, benzene, and other organic solvents; insoluble in water.
  • Combustible.
  • It slowly decomposes when heated to 400°C.
  • Reacts with strong acids to form stearic acid and the corresponding zinc salts.
  • Hygroscopic and non-toxic.

manufacturing process

Stearic acid is heated until melted. A catalyst and zinc oxide are added at 110–130°C, and the mixture is stirred to react. After the sample passes inspection, the product is flaked and pulverized using an airflow vortex mill to obtain a finished product with a particle size of ≤75 μm.

Applications

Mainly used as a softening and lubricating agent for rubber products; a release agent in powder processing; a polishing agent for textiles; a heat stabilizer for PVC plastics; a flatting agent for paints and enamels; and a raw material for cosmetic powders, among other applications.

Identification

Stearic acid test Weigh about 25 g sample, add 60 mL dilute sulfuric acid and 200 mL hot water. Heat with stirring intermittently until fatty acid separates out as oil layer. Wash the oil layer with boiling water until sulfate test of the washing liquid is negative. Transfer oil layer to a small beaker, heat on steam bath to fully separate oil & water phase until oil layer turns clear. Cool down and remove water layer. Heat to melt the oil layer, filter hot and transfer to dry beaker, dry at 105°C for 20 min. Test its solidifying point ≥54℃.

Zinc ion test Weigh 1.0 g sample, add 25 mL water and 5 mL hydrochloric acid, shake and heat until fatty acid separates as oil layer. Cool and take aqueous phase, it shall present positive identification reaction of zinc salt. Potassium ferrocyanide reagent will generate zinc ferrocyanide precipitate; excess reagent produces sparingly soluble Zn₃K₂[Fe(CN)₆]₂ precipitate. This precipitate is insoluble in dilute acid and ammonia water, soluble in strong alkali.

advantages and limitations

Advantages

  • Good internal lubrication and mold release performance for rubber and plastics.
  • Improves powder flowability and filler dispersion during compounding.
  • Acts as auxiliary heat stabilizer, helps to absorb acidic decomposition products.
  • Water-insoluble, provides water repellency.
  • Low toxicity, safe for normal industrial handling.
  • Improves compatibility between inorganic fillers and polymer matrix.

Limitations

  • Prone to blooming (surface migration) if over-dosed.
  • Excess amount will slow down rubber vulcanization and reduce crosslink density.
  • Not suitable for highly transparent formulations, as it impairs transparency.
  • Hygroscopic; may cake if stored without proper sealing.
  • Decomposes under strong acid conditions; decomposes slowly above 400°C.
  • High dosage may negatively affect electrical insulation properties.

FAQ

1. How does particle size / mesh size affect rubber compounding performance?

A: Finer powder (higher mesh) achieves faster and more uniform dispersion in polymer, reduces agglomeration, improves surface finish of finished rubber parts. Coarse grades may leave particle spots and weaken tensile strength. We can supply different mesh grades upon your formulation requirements.

2. What are the key storage risks and shelf-life considerations?

A: Zinc stearate is hygroscopic. Store sealed in cool, dry, ventilated warehouse, avoid moisture, high temperature and direct sunlight. Long exposure to humidity causes caking and poor dispersion. Shelf life is 12 months under proper storage conditions. Once bag opened, finish consumption quickly and keep tightly sealed.

3. What is the thermal decomposition behavior of zinc stearate during rubber processing?

A: Melting point 120–125°C. It remains stable under normal rubber vulcanization temperature. Slow decomposition occurs above 400°C. It cannot be used for ultra-high-temperature curing systems.
